Beware of Increased Marketing for the HPV Vaccine

As sales plummet for vaccines in general and HPV vaccines in particular, it is often the playbook for Pharma and those with financial ties to the medical industry to increase promotions for the vaccine. Promotions can be overt such as more tv advertisements or covert such as “free” vaccinations and increased financial incentives for providers including pharmacists to increase uptake.

In 2018, in Maryland, a major campaign to increase uptake of the HPV vaccine was launched by the Maryland Department of Health. The strategy to increase uptake was to train providers to move from educating to “doing”, i.e. assertively administering the vaccine without discussion. The messaging was to claim that the HPV vaccine IS cancer prevention. But is it? Or is that false messaging meant to increase sales?

The most recent report regarding the HPV vaccine and cancer prevention is the Cochrane 2025 meta-analysis as they looked at all available evidence. The Cochrane report was analyzed by HPV vaccine experts, Lucija Tomljenovic, PhD, Dr. Peter Gotzsche, Dr. Sin Hang Lee and others and is discussed in the interview linked here. The interview was prompted by the fact that Pharma now seeks other markets to increase uptake and they want to mandate HPV vaccination in countries like Croatia. Dr. Tomljenovic has researched and published extensively about the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) and shares her knowledge to push back against such mandates.

According to Tomljenovic, most of the available studies in the literature were excluded from the Cochrane review because they did not meet the review selection criteria. Tables towards the end of the review give the risk of bias summary list for those studies that were included. Bias in a study indicates systematic error or deviation from truth causing the results to be invalid and unreliable.

Of the 19 included studies, only 4 had moderate risk of bias and did not even include cervical cancer as an endpoint. All of the other studies had critical or serious risk of bias. According to Tomljenovic, “One CANNOT with any intellectual or scientific integrity claim that these data support the claim of cervical cancer prevention.” Additionally, the cervical cancer incidence data from various countries pre and post HPV vax introduction researched by Dr. Tomljenovic positively disprove the claim that HPV vaccination is cancer prevention.

As always, educate before you vaccinate.
